1. 1. You are excited to do engineering but have you done your HOMEWORK?: Teenagers have very less idea about what a course exactly has to offer. 30-40 percentage of today’s engineer has no idea why they took engineering and are doing work which has nothing to do with engineering. For example:

Expectations increase with efforts, competitions and previous milestones and when the financial year ends or when the appraisal cycle comes into the picture, a lot of questions and thoughts arise in our minds:

Few thoughts that arise during the appraisal cycle:

1. How will this year appraisals go?
2. Will I get a better hike this time?
3. Should I put my papers before the appraisals?
4. I have not got a promotion for a while. Would my boss recognize my efforts with a promotion and/or salary raise?
5. Am expecting x% of the hike this year. if I don’t get x% better to take the hike and search elsewhere.

Although, we rarely think if we really deserve a Promotion or Salary raise OR Is the work done really outstanding and great for which I will get a raise OR What are the factors deciding whether one deserves a Promotion or Salary raise.

Tips to prepare yourself for Promotion or Salary raise:

1. Given a Scenario, when an employee completes a task before the deadline. Ideally, 80% of the employees would run away from the office but the remaining 20% are those who ask for more task/responsibilities. One’s approach to volunteer for extra work is a plus point itself to get recognized. Moreover, if the extra job is completed quickly and efficiently in a better approach then it’s like to add a point in the checklist.
2. Speak Out!! No one is going to come asking for your concerns. It’s you who needs to take the initiative and ask for what you want. Hence, don’t sit back and wish things would take your side. Money won’t shower out of the sky on anyone (employee’s at least). Prepare a POP (Proof Of Performance).
3. Since last promotion or salary raise, make a list of all the new skill-set you have learnt as well as all the jobs and responsibilities you have taken up.
4. Mention the benefits or the impact of your work to the organization.
5. Spot the unforeseen threat to the company and solve it. You would surely be noticed; hence more chances of promotion or salary raise.
6. Convince the management to depend on you and explain to them how well you are ready for the next position/designation.
7. Take part in organizational activities, represent your firm in social media or extracurricular activities outside your office and normal day to day KRA (say CSR initiative or competitions or delivering presentations at various forums).
8. Not to forget, maintain a good rapport with your clients, boss and the team. Appreciations from clients are added advantage and Needless to mention, Your work should force them to do it and not use alternative tactics to be rewarded.
9. Take up challenges and tasks which is taken by the people designated with the promotion you are looking for. This will make yourself ready for the same.
10. Update your skills and not to forget that they should align the organization needs.

If you satisfy the above qualities then you are surely worthy for a promotion or an uptick in the salary. However, things might not turn on your favours every-time. Remember! Nothing comes for FREE. Work hard and don’t be discouraged as HARD WORK always pays.

1. Commuting: If it’s a family member, commuting wouldn’t be an issue. You would end up having great discussions during commuting, and time spent would be like a PHEW! Sometimes if its own vehicle, you end up saving fuel and money.
2. Intimacy: Don’t get us wrong; we are only highlighting the increase in connection between the two, in terms of problem solving easier at work? This is because; people find it easier to explain things to known ones. Try to solve them as one team. This in turn increases the bonding.
3. Support: You might support each other as you both would know the issues at office and how to deal with them. The understanding INCREASES. You might even end up helping each other in solving the issues along with other colleagues.
4. Finance: People find it easy to maintain the financial balance while working with known ones. Planning for the family might be easier. Especially if you both are earning the same pay. Sometimes the bonus or sometimes extended health coverage etc would be added advantage.
5. Productivity and Learning opportunity: According to some study, productivity increases while working with like-minded people, and hence usually they tend to hire spouses or the sibling or any one in relation to an employee. We even tend to learn effectively on the tools products, reports, business, new working trends and so on.
6. Appraisal and Onsite opportunities: If your spouse or known one is in higher authority, your appraisal may go smooth (conditions apply, as in, if you share a healthy personal relation). Sometimes, it might be easier for them to get the opportunity to work onsite if one gets a chance.

1. You end up continuing the same old work related discussions even at the dinner table , while that would be the only place you would be together at home. If you don’t stay in same house, then probably whenever you meet apart from work you would discuss official matters. Thus, converting personal conversation into official ones.
2. Sometimes you might not get the essential support if the third person involved is more close to either of you. Supporting any might lead to misunderstandings with the other.
3. We kind of lack the personal space at work while dealing with people at office. Even, getting closer or having soft corners to someone at work, the late night dinners or the lunches or the treats or just an outing, everything might be questioned.
4. Little do they realize how badly it affects during company loss. God forbidden! They might be thrown out same time, ending up with no income all at once (if its spouse). Even the weak compensations lead to frustrations. Hence, there are chances of lack of job security too.
5. At times, your personal life issues may affect the productivity while working together or vice versa.
6. If staying together, you might end up facing the same person at home and office leading to no change in your life. Even Kids might face issues if the timings you both spend at office is the same.
7. Planning the leaves might be difficult if you both are working in the same team. Leave approval would then be very challenging.
8. The rising of one and mere failure of the other might create a kind of jealousy and thus affecting the personal relation. This might even lead to hatred and increase the competition between two.

   2. Baseless Objective or Purpose: The first thing we have on our resume is our objective which is no doubt copied from friends resume or searched on the internet.    3. Grammar errors / Spelling mistakes: Literated for more than 15-17 years and committing silly grammar mistakes is a clear sign of negligence.
