(like how it functions, how you write some simple queries etc, how can you fetch it faster, hot to optimize the query, how can you join 2 tables, stored procedures, triggers) etc. w3schools is a website which will help you kick start on these.

4. Software Engineering – SDLC (software development life cycle) is must for every person who is looking for a job in an IT company. Hence you should know all the phases right from Planning to Maintenance phase along with the functionality of each phase and some knowledge on the same. Also, nowadays testing is getting popular so little knowledge on different types of testing too is an add-on.

5. MVC (MODEL VIEW CONTROLLER) is a pattern used by most of the project in the corporate world. Wiki has basic information about the same.

6. Software development methodology: Agile model, waterfall model etc. Once again, Wiki will help you gain the knowledge on each.

Moonlighting Meaning

In simple words, “Moonlighting refers to second or part time jobs that one does in their free time in addition to regular employment to earn extra pennies”.

Many MNC’s said that employees cannot take up other assignments during business hours or outside of them. The taglines that were used by Infosys were “No two-timing, no moonlighting” and “No double lives”.

Few weeks earlier, Wipro chairman Rishad Premji termed moonlight as “plain and cheating”. Infosys has sent emails to its employees warning them about moonlighting, which is not permitted according to the employee code of conduct. Any violation in this regard will lead to employers taking disciplinary action, which can include termination of employment.

So how did Moonlighting come into picture all of sudden?

Moonlighting became popular during the remote work culture that took place during a pandemic with a duration of 2 years, which allowed employees to pursue side projects. A survey suggested that 65 percent of respondents were pursuing part time opportunities. But now that many firms are rolling back work from offices, moonlighting has become a hot topic for debate and has divided the public with their opinions.

Why this is a Concern to anyone or any company?

Most employers do not feel comfortable giving permission to work on other people or companies’ projects when the opportunity to do remote work is given by their regular employment. Recent statements from India’s biggest IT companies suggest that the moonlighting problem has assumed significant proportions.

According to the Infosys employment contract, dual employment is not permitted and is against the code of conduct.

In the offer letter received by the employees, it states that the employee does not agree to take employment, whether full-time or part-time of any other organization engaged in any form of business activity without the consent of the company.

The consent may be given subject to any terms and conditions that the company may think fit and may be withdrawn at any time at the discretion of the company. In a recent conversation with Infosys EVP and group HR head Krish Shankar, he did not talk directly about moonlighting, side hustles, and gig workforce issues.

However, many companies are now encouraging employees to do internal gigs if they have time to do it and if it interests them. Therefore, they created a platform called Accelerate for external gigs and rewarding people who participate.

The responses of IT companies to moonlighting are in contrast to some new age Indian companies. Swiggy recently announced that its employees could take up other gigs. But, condition applies that as long as it does not affect their productivity at the food delivery venture and is done outside of office hours.

We all wish to fly high and if there is a campus placement who is offering a less package; we feel we are insulted and no value for us. Wait for a second! Ask yourself ‘What package do you deserve?’. Also, ask yourself ‘What have you achieved to deserve that package’? For many of us who just have a paper degree and not even strong basics, stop dreaming and start working on improving yourself.

• Have got no in-depth knowledge of basics!
• Cannot solve a simple algorithm
• Have knowledge but you can’t apply it practically.
• Cannot be put directly into any projects in the company.
• Need to study aptitude separately for interviews and it doesn’t come by default.
• Cannot explain basics of technology to your juniors
• Hunt crazily for freshers job openings every day but you don’t prepare for openings every day.
• Cannot do your own college project properly
• Are hesitant to give a presentation in front of your own classmates.
• Cannot write one program in the lab without seeing the code!

and yet dream of great packages. The list can go on and on, however, one must realize their worth and then improvise the skills as the market needs!

For every fresher or fresh graduate, who is passionate, looking for a kick start career into the world of IT (Information Technology) below are the basic things a fresher job seeker in 2018 must possess in order to get hired or get an amazing opportunity to attend an interview as freshers in top technology companies.

1. In the freshers’ resume, recruiters first look for the following: Crisp introduction and area of experience. (E.g.: Strong Programming and Data structure skills or Strong e-commerce domain/telecom skills)
2. Your educational qualification with your cGPA scores must be easily viewable. It’s not necessary to mention your 10th and 12th scores if you have prior work experience.
3. Working in college project or any other project is a sign a fresh graduate have prior practical exposure. At times, your college projects will decide your career path as well (Read more: College Project may decide your job). If you have worked on multiple projects, Jot down your recent experience first and then previous stints. Also, you must clearly explain the following:
   • Projects you worked on.
   • Your roles and responsibilities in the project.
   • Technologies used.
4. Donating blood, winning a 100-meter race, participating in college competition is not an achievement that a technical recruiter looks for. On a contrary, Your contribution to the open source (link to GitHub/stack overflow), participation in a hackathon, paper presentation in various forums, will value more. Top recruiters dig this.
5. Participate in various online forums; contribute for some answers in stack overflow, solve some problems in sites like hacker earth, hacker rank etc. These websites will not only improve your skillset but also create a good rapport with the companies.
6. Even if you did not graduate from a fancy college, your interest in coding or any field for that matters determines the efforts you put into learning new things as a fresher by yourself. 
7. Please do not include skills like MS Excel. One, nobody cares. Two, most of them don’t even know 2% of what this insane application can achieve.
8. 2 job changes in 6 months is a big No for any company. It’s a clear sign of trust and loyalty issues unless you have legitimate reasons.
9. Many think lengthy resume means greater value. No one will read 6 pages of resume. So make it short and easy to read. Even Elon Musk has a 1-page resume. 
10. Formatting of a resume is very important, yet people do not take it seriously. Reading an unformatted resume is a big turn off for recruiters and there are chances, your resume is not even read.
11. Lastly, do not add skills or technologies that you have not worked on just to make your profile impressive. (E.g.: Languages known: c, c++, java, .net, PHP). Know your resume inside out as the interviewers will surely interview based on your resume.

The latter one would inspire you more to stick with your resolutions if defined well. Resolutions should be feasible. Know yourself, your capacity, know where you are heading towards and then plan accordingly. It’s advisable to make smaller resolutions and achieve them first than working on Bigger New year resolutions directly. Learn from your mistakes and never repeat them. Firstly, change your mindset, without that you can’t reach your goals. Like someone said,

Majority of working Indian’s are suffering from lack of sleep i.e. sleep less than 8 hours everyday.In the present situation where each individual is completely occupied with responsibilities or work, end up their day with a ‘Phew!‘. We often tend to say ‘Let me sleep for 5 more minutes’ when our all-time enemy Mr. Alarm wakes us up in the morning without realizing importance of our of sleep.

Questions we usually get or ask ourselves due to lack of sleep:

• Why do i forcefully get up every single day?
• I am always lack of sleep, But why?
• Why are you sleepy whole day at work?
• Am taking more time to complete a task sometimes; Not sure, why?
• Why can’t we complete our required sleep hours and then begin the day with full enthusiasm and fresh mood?

Per the current trends,

Average human beings sleep between 10 PM to 6 AM, however few of them either tend to get inspired by Sir Abdul Kalam’s quotes “Dream is not the thing you see in sleep but is that thing that doesn’t let you sleep” or “some dive so much into laptop or mobile that they tend to forget about sleep”. As a result you end up sleeping around 2 AM or 3 AM or even 4 AM sometimes which is still acceptable if you sleep for next 7-8 hours but the problem occurs when you wake up at 7 AM – 8 AM to get back to daily race of life.

Try this! A small experiment folks.

The prefrontal cortex is still functioning. Sleep is the only way to rest your Prefrontal cortex in order to utilize it better for the rest of the day / next day.

Our health is directly proportional to our sleep. In fact, both are interdependent on each other. We observe the decline in the sleeping hours with age. The below table is self-explanatory on the ideal sleep hours for all the age groups. If followed properly, we can avoid many health related issues.

Lack of sleep leads to following adverse effects:

• Lack of Concentration, reasoning power, alertness, problem solving capacities.
• Reduces learning capacities.
• An unhealthy or improper diet followed with no sleep or less sleep hours leads to OBESITY.
• Lack of sleep increases blood pressure due to stress.
• It also weakens the immunity system, which is otherwise designed to protect us from cough, cold, flue etc.
• Disturbed mind.
• Leads to skin damage, hence you would grow old sooner than the actual rate.
• Have negative impact like long and short term memory loss.
• Harms your heart. Beware! <6 hours of sleep leads to a greater risk of coronary heart disease and strokes as well when compared to people having 7-8 hours of sleep.  All above mentioned consequences can be avoided just by providing sufficient amount of sleep.

 Is a quick nap after Research activity / study / brain-storming session or anything that involves learning recommended?

A nap after study is like hitting CTRL+S (save option) after creating a content. If you save it,  it will remain in memory else you might loose. Similarly, information is saved in memory at a much higher rate when you have a nap after study. Memory slip rate slows down when one sleeps after studying. This suggests that, getting adequate sleep is a critical part of learning something new, and plays an important part in stabilizing new memories.

Thus,

Increase overall productivity. Sleep scientists’ studies have shown that 90 minutes of sleep is advisable after study. Sleep helps one to re-analyze his or her memories, leading to increased insight. As the day wears on, a degradation in thinking ability is observed. For a few, an afternoon nap increases learning capacity, and for others, it’s a cup of caffeine. To simply brief it out, researchers say sleeping just after studying improves one’s ability to recall information. However, we should also accept the bitter truth that memory-enriching sleep stages start declining in our late 30s, though research on how to enhance these stages in old age is still going on.

WORK will still be there in the morning, a good-night sleep won’t be.
