The dawn of the year 2021 isn’t going as planned and 2022 is still looking blurred. An invisible tiny virus left a huge magnitude of disruption and destruction in its path and is continuing its rampage. And as the adage goes, necessity is the mother of invention; we found a way to work our lives around this disaster as well. So, Is Work From Home The Next Big Thing? Let’s find out.

Human beings, for centuries now, have known to rise above the myriad of challenges that have come their way. And each time they do so, there comes a new wave of innovation that changes the way people live forever. With the lock down initiated and social distancing being the norm, many businesses continued to function with its workforce now logging in from home.

This catastrophe has caused a loss of lives, livelihood, and has altered the way we did things. While many countries buckled under the strain of the pandemic, economies ceased its operations and the world came to a screeching halt.

The power of technology and the growth in internet technology was harnessed to make it all possible. Work from home is the new normal and we have embraced this with a sense of relief in these uncertain times. But what does work from home entail and what does it mean for the employers and employees? Other than the comfort of sitting at one’s study or home office in a more comfortable environment”

ALSO READ: Mental Impact of lockdown and 4 key tips to become Mentally Healthy and Strong

Here are some reasons why work from home is the next big thing:

Savings:

In terms of time, money, and effort, there are advantages for the employers and the employee. Working from home, allows one to be more focused and productive as they are less fatigued and more comfortable at their home than in the confines of the office cubicle while being subject to monitoring and interruptions.

Travel to work and back home, which eats up most waking hours of an individual, is drastically reduced, hence reducing travel costs. For companies that arrange transport facilities for their employees, this move means saving a ton of money and coordination efforts. Working from home means minimum usage of the official premises which leads to cutting down of utility charges and miscellaneous expenditure as well.

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.

Expanding Talent Pool:

Fewer Leaves:

Employees who work in offices are inclined to take leaves whether sick or running errands. When at home, employees may refrain from taking sick leaves if they are mildly ill but can still manage to attend work. For other leaves, the employees may still be able to attend important chores while ensuring to complete the official tasks at hand without losing a day.

Jump right into work when you are ready. And leave when you are done. There’s zero friction between working and not.

Exploring Opportunities:

Covering new geographic areas and reaching out to new customers will be less stressful on company finances as they do not have to physically set-up offices in a different location. Businesses can now expand into new areas allowing the team in the specific location to connect with the local customers there and just report to the main office via emails, and/or video-based conferencing software.

What you’re supposed to do when you don’t like a thing is change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. Don’t complain.

If work from home becomes a norm even after the current situation recedes, it would open up doorways for organizations to onboard talent i.e. hire employees irrespective of the location they are based in. From interview to orientation being conducted online, a job aspirant doesn’t have to move to another place. This means uprooting their entire lifestyle and shifting to new surroundings which could be nerve-wracking at times.

Persistence is very important. You should not give up unless you are forced to give up.

Conclusion:

With the work from home to continue even after the pandemic scare is over, many multinational and Indian conglomerates are seeing this trend as a viable long-term option. While technology cannot completely change or guide human behavior, companies will have to scale-up their remote work policies and capabilities.

Infact, few companies are already providing long term or permanent work from home option to certain employees. Ultimately, work from home is highly effective and productive, if practiced correctly it will prove beneficial for employers and employees in the long run.

Psychology defines introverts as someone who tends to be more focused on internal thoughts and feelings. Individuals with this personality style are characterized by a preference for solitary experiences and it’s not because they dislike others. They derive more pleasure and are energized by their own inner life social events. Yet a misunderstood bunch; introverts have received a bad rap for being overly analytical, critical thinkers and to some extent lack of empathy for others. But these presumptions are incorrect and there is lot everyone learn from the introverts.

With prevailing lock down situation, social distancing has become the norm and made us all stay within the confines of our home, for our safety of course. So with the lock down being touted as “an introvert’s paradise”, what possibly could be the take away for a situation like this?

Interestingly, did you know that the introverts hold many potential advantages and character traits that one can imbibe to be a more responsive and effective employee?

What?!

Really….Yes!

That’s right and here’s some pointers that you can capitalize and make your office a happier and productive place when all this ends and we are back on track.

7 Things We Can Learn From the Introverts:

Deep Thinking: Several critical situations that arise in a workplace demand thinking on all levels. With this ability, you are often able to solve any problem on an advanced level due to the potential of considering multiple solutions. This shall benefit in tempering some of the impulsive traits that are usually seen in extroverts.

Great Problem Solvers: This is a byproduct of being deep thinkers. As said earlier, introverts feel energized when they are alone as it provides them with “me” time to hear their own words, gain insight and focus on the problem at hand. Since they are in their mind and contemplating, they do not get distracted which is a great advantage and that makes them the right people to solve problems.

Less Drama: Being less interested in non-productive conversations supported with a quiet demeanor and a sense of calmness, they tend to dedicate themselves on the task at hand. They stay away from office gossips, prefer meaningful expressions with colleagues and can maintain appropriate boundaries wherever they are at.

Listening Skills: They are great listeners and put a lot of thought on every word that leaves their mouths. This is a very beneficial trait in a workplace as it allows you to absorb knowledge and gain insight from those around you and then respond with a well-defined output. Be Empathetic: Since they have a high level of self-awareness which makes them more sensitive to the needs of others around, they are better positioned to extend a lending hand and show immense consideration to everyone connected with them for work.

Excellent At Correcting Errors: Since they are great listeners, introverts have a self-reflective mindset that enables them to take on any feedback constructively. They even process this information to turn it into action steps for their development and growth. They take their mistakes seriously and begin working to correct their errors with great integrity.

Meaningful Connections: We are living in a digital world and this lock down is a testament to it. Not that digital prowess required any validation; it has helped offices to stay connected and employees to work from the safety of their homes.

Having said that, the digital world might be the playground for the extrovert but the introverts its much more than that. The introvert has one-on-one, in-depth meaningful conversation that stimulates their mind and helps in creating meaningful conversations. This quality is highly beneficial in a modern workplace where work relationships are based on a strong foundation of trust and knowledge that drives efficiency at all levels.

Also Read: 10 awesome insights about Procrastination at work

Work-Life Balance: We have skewed balance between the professional and personal time based on today’s work life. It isn’t surprising that daily interaction with colleagues and dealing with tasks leaves one completely drained. This is something that the introverts are very aware of. They know the importance of spending quality time alone is the best to draw inspiration and motivation. They are able to strike a positive balance between work and personal life.

Again, being an introvert should not be confused with being lonely. Solitude can be therapeutic and healing. These days could be hard on the outgoing people but the capacity to enjoy one’s company is a form of emotional maturity and also helps us to glance inward; to see what is it that truly makes us happy and lead fulfilling lives.

The title may take you by surprise. Whoever thought crying or venting secretly, can impact positively, then you have got it right! Henceforth, vent it out but productively. The agitation, pent up frustration and the palpable tension that simmers from a cubicle – is all too common in modern workplaces. But what if all the emotions you had bottled up inside threatens to blow up?

Well, no need to panic; we are humans after all. We reaching a breaking point and need an outlet to just say it out and be done with it. Even for those who love their job and colleagues. Again, this isn’t an uncommon occurrence, everyone vents at work when the stress and frustrations get a tad too much to handle.

Be it a boss breathing down your neck, a tight project deadline or an annoying co-worker, venting it out is natural but it doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. Venting creates a negative environment in the workplace which may lead to disruption and bring down everyone’s morale and hamper productivity.

Also constant crying or venting may make you seem annoying to your colleagues. But then if you are feeling to cry or vent it out anyway, there are some steps you can follow to gain control and move toward building a genuine feeling of camaraderie and hope.

How?

4 Productive ways to vent it out to uplift yourself:

Seek Support from Colleagues or friends:

A conversation with a colleague who is on the same wavelength as you are is good start. A dialogue, person to person may help you change your perspective. In order to maintain space for a new opinion, be specific from the outset that you want to hear your colleague’s view as well. In short, seek support but leave room for disagreement.

BE CAREFUL WHO YOU VENT TO A LISTENING EAR COULD ALSO BE A RUNNING MOUTH

Write It Down:

When you face hurdles in communicating the problem with anyone at work, the tried and tested method of writing it down works well. With absolutely all pros and no cons to this method, vent it out on a piece of paper or your journal, just let the words flow. Plus, after writing down all that’s bothering you, a lot of stressors seem much less significant. It really does! Try it out.

Also Read: Harassment at work – A slow poison for personal breakdown

Balance It Off:

There is always someone or some particular thing that will be making your life harder. But push yourself to keep these negative things in check and challenge yourself to be a little more observant to notice the plenty of good things that are always happening around you.

Minimize The Impact:

If you going to vent it out do it with as little impact as possible. Try not to do it that often and with not the same people. You may be known as competent, intelligent, or a leader material– whatever professional reputation you hold to make sure you don’t add the title of the constant complainer to it.

Be A Solution Seeker:

Venting out is all good but dedicate time to come up with solutions as well. Most of the time people will vent out to blow off some steam without any intent to figure out resolution to the problem. It won’t get better unless you are going to do something about it.

So there it is, you have the right to complain but remember to do it in a way that doesn’t disrupt your team and the work ambiance. The negative impact of a disengaged workforce is quite high than you would think. But if you would follow the steps suggested, you will be able to transform the venting experience into something more productive and positive.
