If you are a fresher and if you are from a non-IT background or an IT background and wondering what to prepare for the technical interview at an IT company, this article will provide tips for freshers technical interview questions in IT Companies.

The most important tip every job seeker looking to crack technical interview questions in IT Companies is that one must not get scared of programming languages or EVEN syntax (especially if you are from the non-IT background), the companies will teach you how to write code but what you need to be worried about is the LOGIC and the APPROACH to solve any question or write any code.

Tips for fresher’s technical interview questions in IT Companies:

C/ C++ Programming – Everyone learns a bit of C/C++ either in school/colleges. Right from how to declare a variable to how to make a function call (i assume these are very basic and everyone must be aware of this). One must also be able to write simple programs like Fibonacci series, searching algorithm, sorting algorithm or even code to get an output as per given patterns.

Data structures – Data structures are like pillars of the building. It’s a must, for every IT aspirants. This subject will serve as foundation irrespective of new technologies / new coding languages emerge. Therefore, lay down your data structures and algorithm knowledge foundation perfectly, to pick up any technologies easily.

Database – The information you see in any web page/application or even this blog needs to be saved somewhere. However, for any large applications, the way you store, the way you retrieve the data matters a lot and hence need expertise. (like how it functions, how you write some simple queries etc, how can you fetch it faster, hot to optimize the query, how can you join 2 tables, stored procedures, triggers) etc. w3schools is a website which will help you kick start on these.

Software Engineering – SDLC (software development life cycle) is must for every person who is looking for a job in an IT company. Hence you should know all the phases right from Planning to Maintenance phase along with the functionality of each phase and some knowledge on the same. Also, nowadays testing is getting popular so little knowledge on different types of testing too is an add-on.

MVC (MODEL VIEW CONTROLLER) is a pattern used by most of the project in the corporate world. Wiki has basic information about the same.

Software development methodology: Agile model, waterfall model etc. Once again, Wiki will help you gain the knowledge on each.

OOPS concept – very important again. Usually asked few questions on these. Object-Oriented Programming Language (OOPS) has various concepts like abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance etc. Read on Wikipedia to get started with it.

Other tips for freshers technical interview questions in IT Companies:

Apart from the above topics, few things what every fresher should keep in their mind and prepare yourself:

First and foremost your Communication skills; if you clear aptitude and have average technical skills but you have awesome soft skills and communication skills, you still stand a very good opportunity to crack the interview. This includes the way you sit, the way you respond, the way you present yourself, everything counts. Hence, don’t give up your hopes even if you performance was average.

College / Hobby project – Consider your college project/hobby project as your first project in corporate life. To excel in your corporate life, this is your first step. However, as part of your interview, you can expect questions around below topics:

What is the problem your project is trying to solve

Know the concepts applied

The significance of the same

Technically, how did u develop it?

Architecture of the project

Design diagrams for each screen.

You can outsource a project in your college life but you cannot outsource the same in the corporate world.

Prior work experience ( i.e if you have any) – Work profile, your roles, and responsibilities; this gives an idea that you have experience and carry professional etiquette.

Your attitude – Very important deciding factor, you should be confident, bold and optimistic.

Aptitude Test round:

Most of the time, the first round in an interview will be an Aptitude test. This is what comes by practice and sometimes by common sense. Neither shortcuts nor any magic in this is will work. Only efforts, continuous practice and sometimes luck (as per candidates) will work. Check out our Aptitude Question and Answers

Lastly, as they say, irrespective of freshers technical interview questions, a good interviewer can judge a candidate within first ten seconds after the candidate enters the interview hall. Hence watch your moves and set the first impression perfectly right.

“Opportunities will be many but are you PREPARED to crack it?”

Eliminations during the interview process are very difficult for companies and Quantitative / Qualitative / Technical Aptitude and Technical rounds are not sufficient to filter the applicants. Hence Group Discussion a.k.a GD serves as a mass elimination tool for a lot of mass recruiting companies.

A lot of aspiring candidates who are really good with technologies and technical knowledge have a setback when they get to know there is group discussion round in interview process. “Should we conduct Group Discussion round for technical interviews” is very good topic to conduct a Group Discussion/debate on. However, this article will help you to clear the hurdle of group discussions.

Reference: www.pace2race.com

Below are a few reasons why you must consider group discussions (GD) as an important factor and how it helps the candidates:

Companies hiring candidates will already have a clear-cut idea of what kind of students they are looking for and hence having a Group Discussion round helps them to find the right match based on interpersonal skills.

Group Discussion will help to measure your ability to understand a given topic, your knowledge with current affairs, your body language, the way you respect or contradict other candidate’s views and your attitude. A recruiter wouldn’t want someone who is having a bad attitude or more aggressive on other candidates in their company.

It also checks your communication skills, confidence level as well as your behaviour and way of speaking etc. All your soft skills will be tested here.

Candidates who have stage fear and fear of speaking in front of others should consider this as an opportunity to overcome the fear and build the confidence in them as it is very much essential to be a good team player in the company.

Group Discussions not only helps to share one’s valuable thoughts and ideas regarding the topic given but also helps in being a good team player which is very much essential in today’s competitive world.

Points to remember during a Group Discussion

In a Group Discussion (GD), you are expected to contribute meaningfully on the given topic and help arrive at a generic conclusion. It is not a platform for you to showcase your debate skills. It is more of a team activity where the best among the team player will be picked.

Be yourself, calm down take a deep breath and sit straight in a confident posture. You need to look impressive, well groomed and confident.

Think well before you speak. Body language is important, so be careful while using gestures and do not ever get aggressive. You are being watched, heard and judged upon.

Be an active and dynamic participant. The examiner wants to hear you share your views. Hence, put your views forward but do not be over-confident. Using great quotes, facts, and figures, everyday life examples to express thoughts may also leave a good impression on the examiner and help you to score well.

Start and end the discussion: If you have very good knowledge on the topic then grab the opportunity to speak first. It leaves a good impression on the evaluator. Also, summarizing or ending up the Group Discussion will help you leave a good impression.

Listening skill is important: You must also ensure that you listen as well as respect what others are saying. At any point, If you do not agree with someone’s point, let them complete and then raise your objection.

Make an eye contact with all the participants: Rest of the world should be unseen, not even examiner/judge. Especially when you are seated on 2nd position, you tend to ignore looking into candidate seated in the 1st position which is very important. Also, nodding when others speak shows respect towards them.

What if you do not have any knowledge about the topic of the group discussion?

Firstly, calm down and relax. Do not panic at all.

For the first few minutes, carefully listen to the views/discussion that takes place.

Evaluate the discussion and form your views on the topic.

Your views/opinion need not be correct but it needs to be logical and it should indicate such that you are sharing your views on the topic.

Add one or two points in between the discussion and later on, grab an opportunity to conclude on the topic.

This must make a good impression. However be careful that there is quality in what point you are making.

Strict NO to below activity during a group discussion:

Do not repeat a point or drag a point or make an irrelevant point on the topic.

Don’t look into watch often and a STRICT no to shaking your hands or legs.

Do not play with any other objects like pen/notepad/mobile etc.

Never interrupt or object while others are speaking. Remember its group discussion and NOT DEBATE COMPETITION.

Do not make an eye contact with the audience or examiner. Only eye contact with all candidates only.

Are you a HR professional?

Have you ever been to a gathering or a party where you need to socialize?

Have you ever over heard someone saying ‘HR’s do not work’?

What happens when you meet someone new and they ask you about your job?

Let’s give an insight…

“Stranger: Hi, What do you do?
Me: Hi. I am a HR
Stranger (Giggling): No. Seriously what do you do?
Me: err… I work as a HR
Stranger: But HRs don’t work… (Falling in fits of laughter)
Me: ….”

This awkward conversation has taken place umpteen number of times with most of the HR’s. I know, I know, whenever these conversations happen you feel like throwing your drink on the hypothetical stranger’s face and bask in glee inside or just want to punch their face into pulp. But let’s be civilized here. People / Employees who think all that HRs do, is sit and while away time and get paid are ignorant and needs enlightening.

Let us see a different version of the above conversation:

‘Me: Hi. I am a HR
Stranger (fake fear): Are you gonna fire me baby?? *wynk* ‘

‘Me: Hi. I am a HR
Stranger: so you just have meetings for the next meeting? *Smirk*’

‘Me: Hi. I am a HR
Stranger: Can you find me a job?
Me (fake smile): Sure. We all are waiting to hire you.’

These are just a few examples. Many a people think all HR’s do is hire and fire people or work on their paychecks. While these are a part of HR function, this is not all what a HR does. With the increasing time, need for human capital has increased and with increased human capital, came the need of professionals who can manage them efficiently and prove to be beneficial for both the organization and the individuals.

HR’s are actually a group of professionals at the pulse of the organization. Life of an employee will be far worse without the involvement of a HR. Let us take an example:

You think you are performing well. Your peers get all the perks while you bust your ass to be 100% productive, but no recognition. You come to work every day and go home every day at the same time and you are in the same role for the past 15 years. Can you imagine how monotonous and boring your life will be??

What would you do in this scenario?
Did HR come to your mind?

Congratulations!! You are correct.

On a serious note, HR’s are involved in the following:

HR’s ensure that the place you spend majority of your time is not monotonous and boring.

HR’s ensure that there is no bias and if there is, they get involved to make your, Yes sir YOUR life easy. This is where ‘Employee relations’ part of HR function comes into play.

HR Business Partners (No, they are not actually owners of the org), connect with employees on a regular basis to understand their pulse. They analyze if a particular employee is happy with his role or team or manager etc. and if not, what can be done to resolve it.

HR department make sure that every employee in the organization is following the policies of the Organization irrespective of their position / designation.

Now the question would arise, who are the people writing these policies?

Policies are critical for the growth of the Org. and are written by ‘HR, Strategy’. They come up with the policies after a lot of crucial thinking, data analyzing and research. These strategies are then functional once the MD or the CEO gives a go ahead. Policies include anything from ‘Policy against harassment’ to ‘Transport’ to ‘Relocation’ or ‘Performance appraisal’.

Other aspects of HR are:

‘Succession Planning’, where the career graph of an employee is designed right from the day they join till the end of their career in the organization, according to their talent / potential to fill the future leadership roles

‘Talent Management’, where the main motive is to recruit new talents and develop the talents available in the organization internally, to fulfill future vacancies and growth opportunities.

HRBPs also take care of employee engagement activities like, team outings, events at work etc.

All that mentioned above is just the tip of the ice berg. HR as a function is huge and very critical for an Org. to work smoothly. I can go on and on, but you get the gist.

If you are an HR and next time someone is as ignorant as the strangers above just be patient and explain. If they still don’t get it, just walk away. HR is a profession with little appreciation but lot of Satisfaction. It is after all not everyone’s cup of tea. And if you are an employee then think twice before thinking that HR’s do not work or do not have any work. You never know what they have in mind…
